TAP undertakes seabed survey near San Foca, Lecce, in Italy

The Trans Adriatic Pipeline started a near-shore survey near San Foca, Lecce, in Italy on Tuesday, the 24th of January. The purpose of the survey is to collect samples of the soil on the Adriatic seabed along the future route of the natural gas pipeline, which plans to bring Caspian gas to southern Italy.

TAP is undertaking a seabed survey in order to further refine the routing of the proposed pipeline, given the planned landfall location on the coast between San Foca and Torre Specchia Ruggeri in the municipality of Melendugno (Lecce).

The survey involves the utilisation of a jack-up platform near the shore to perform a geotechnical soil investigation. The soil is both tested directly at the platform (by advanced scientific instruments) and samples are taken for testing at a later date in an onshore laboratory. The soils are tested to a depth of maximum 20 meteres below the seafloor.

Depending on the weather conditions, the jack-up platform should complete its acitivities by the middle of February. The jack-up platform will then be moved out and it will replaced by a barge which will complete the scientific investigation. This barge will be in the San Foca area until the middle of March depending on weather conditions.

The subsea survey is carried out by the TAP project with the support of sub-

contractor D’Appolonia, an Italian leader in engineering with core competencies in civil, geotechnical, and environmental engineering; geology and geophysics; and hydrology and hydraulics.

TAP has applied and received permits for this work both from: the Municipality of Melendugno and from the Port Authority of Otranto. TAP appreciates the cooperation of the community which will provide logistical support to the team performing the investigation.”

In February 2012, TAP will organise a public meeting with the community of Melendugno (Lecce) to present to the residents and any other interested parties the proposed location of the pipeline. This meeting will be an opportunity for all community members to ask questions and raise any concerns they may have.

The Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) is a proposed natural gas pipeline project that will transport gas from the Caspian region via Greece and Albania and across the Adriatic Sea to Italy’s Puglia region. It will help to deliver safe, secure energy supplies to the Italian energy markets for the future.

TAP is preparing to submit its Environmental and Social Impact Assesment Report to the Italian authorities (Ministry of Environment) in February 2012. Construciton of the pipeline is expected to start in 2015, should TAP be selected as the preferred gas transportaiton solution by Shah Deniz Consortium in Azerbaijan later this year. 

TAP proposed route in Italy:

TAP’s proposed pipeline system in Puglia consists of approximately 45 km offshore section, a 5 km long onshore pipeline followed by the fiscal measurement of the gas at the Pipeline Receiving terminal (PRT). This project is located in the province of Lecce and will have a capacity of 10 Billion Cubic Metres (bcm) per year of natural gas with a potential to expand to 20 bcm/a. The pipeline’s landfall location is planned on the coast between San Foca and Torre Specchia Ruggeri in the municipality of Melendugno (Lecce). The landfall will be constructed using state-of-the-art micro-tunneling technology that will host pipe (less than 1 m dia) at a depth of about 6 meters below the surface of the sea floor, thus eliminating any impact on the coastline. The TAP pipeline will tie-in with the Italian gas network, operated by Snam Rete Gas a the PRT. 

The current route of the Trans Adriatic Pipeline, with a landfall near Lecce, has been identified after three years of extensive field work in Italy. After analysing numerous alternatives, TAP team selected the most optimal route for the pipeline which avoids crossing environmentally sensitive areas, such as the sea grass meadows Posidonia oceanica, for example.

About the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP):

The Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) is a natural gas pipeline project that will transport gas from the Caspian region via Greece and Albania and across the Adriatic Sea to Southern Italy and further into Western Europe. The project is aimed at enhancing security of supply as well as diversification of gas supplies for the European markets. TAP will open a new so-called Southern Gas Corridor to Europe and establish a new market outlet for natural gas from the Caspian Sea and beyond.

The project is designed to expand transportation capacity from 10 to 20 bcm per year. TAP also envisages physical reverse flow of up to 80 per cent and the option to develop natural gas storage facilities in Albania to further ensure security of supply. 

TAP’s shareholders are EGL of Switzerland (42.5%), Norway’s Statoil (42.5%) and E.ON Ruhrgas of Germany (15%). 

TAP’s transportation solution will be approximately 800 kilometres in length (Approx.: Greece 478 km; Albania 204 km; offshore Adriatic Sea 105 km; Italy 5 km). Transport will begin near the Greek-Turkish border (Komotini), cross Albania and the Adriatic Sea, and connect with the Italian natural gas distribution system near San Foca in Italy.

TAP: AVVIATE INDAGINI SUL FONDALE MARINO NEI PRESSI DI SAN FOCA (LE)

La Trans Adriatic Pipeline ha avviato ieri, martedì 24 gennaio, un sondaggio marino  vicino alla costa nei pressi di San Foca (LE). Lo scopo dell'indagine è quello di raccogliere campioni dal fondale marino lungo il possibile percorso del gasdotto che prevede di portare il gas dal Mar Caspio sino all'Italia meridionale.

TAP sta effettuando quest'indagine al fine di perfezionare ulteriormente l’ipotetico percorso  del gasdotto, che prevede l’approdo sulla costa tra San Foca e Torre Specchia Ruggeri nel Comune di Melendugno (LE).

L’indagine comporta l'utilizzo di una piattaforma sollevabile vicino alla riva per eseguire un’analisi geotecnica del terreno. I campioni di terreno verranno analizzati sia direttamente sulla piattaforma (attraverso l’utilizzo di strumenti scientifici avanzati), sia in un secondo momento in laboratorio. I campioni verranno prelevati sino ad una profondità massima di 20 metri sotto il livello del mare.

A seconda delle condizioni metereologiche, la piattaforma dovrebbe completare la propria attività entro la prima metà di Febbraio. Quando il lavoro della piattaforma sarà terminato, essa verrà sostituita da una chiatta che porterà a termine le analisi scientifiche. Questa chiatta rimarrà nella zona fino alla metà di Marzo, sempre a seconda delle condizioni metereologiche.

L'indagine sottomarina è svolta da TAP con il supporto della società appaltatrice D'Apollonia, azienda italiana leader con specifiche competenze in ingegneria civile, geotecnica ed ambientale; in geologia e geofisica; in idrologia e idraulica.

A Febbraio 2012 TAP organizzerà un incontro pubblico con la comunità nel Comune di Melendugno (Lecce) per presentare ai residenti e a tutte le parti interessate la proposta di tracciato del gasdotto. Questo incontro sarà l'occasione per tutti i cittadini della comunità per ottenere ulteriori informazioni o chiarimenti su eventuali quesiti.

La Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) è il progetto di gasdotto che trasporterà il gas dalla regione del Caspio attraverso la Grecia, l'Albania e il Mare Adriatico sino alla Puglia. Esso contribuirà a fornire per il futuro un sicuro approvvigionamento energetico al mercato italiano.

TAP presenterà la sua Valutazione di Impatto Ambientale e Sociale alle autorità italiane (Ministero dell'Ambiente) entro la fine di Febbraio 2012.

La costruzione del gasdotto dovrebbe iniziare nel 2015, se il progetto TAP viene selezionato dal Consorzio di Shah Deniz in Azerbaijian come la soluzione preferita per il trasporto del gas ad Aprile di questo anno.

Il percorso proposto di TAP in Italia:

Il progetto prevede un tratto di circa 5 km sulla terraferma con terminale di ricezione (PRT). Il progetto avrà capacità di 10 miliardi di metri cubi di gas naturale all'anno con la possibilità di estenderla a 20 miliardi di metri cubi. L’approdo del gasdotto è previsto sulla costa tra San Foca e Torre Specchia Ruggeri nel comune di Melendugno (Lecce). L'approdo verrà costruito utilizzando un sistema di micro-tunneling portando il gasdotto a una profondità di circa 6 metri sotto terra, elimando così ogni impatto peasaggistico lungo la costa. Il metanodotto TAP si connetterà con la rete gas italiana, gestita da Snam Rete Gas.

Il percorso attuale della Trans Adriatic Pipeline, è stato identificato dopo tre anni di lavoro sul campo in Italia. Dopo aver analizzato numerose alternative, la squadra di TAP ha selezionato il percorso ottimale per il gasdotto che evita di attraversare zone ecologicamente sensibili, come le praterie di Posidonia oceanica.

Trans Adriatic Pipeline è un consorzio costituito per la progettazione e realizzazione di un nuovo gasdotto trans-adriatico che trasporterà gas naturale dalla regione del Caspio attraverso Grecia, Albania e Mar Adriatico fino all’Italia meridionale e all’Europa occidentale. Il progetto è stato concepito affinché la quantità di gas trasportato possa passare da 10 a 20 miliardi di metri cubi all’anno a seconda della capacità di produzione. Il progetto TAP prevede inoltre un flusso inverso fisico fino all’80% della sua capacità e la creazione d’impianti di stoccaggio in Albania al fine di garantire ulteriormente la sicurezza dell’approvvigionamento energetico in caso d’interruzioni. 

Gli azionisti TAP sono la svizzera EGL (42,5%), la norvegese Statoil (42,5%) e la tedesca E.ON Ruhrgas (15%). 

Il gasdotto TAP sarà lungo circa 800 chilometri (Grecia 466 km; Albania 204 km; tratto off-shore Mare Adriatico 110 km; Italia 5 km). Il trasporto avrà inizio nei pressi della frontiera greco-turca (Komotini), attraverserà l'Albania e il Mar Adriatico, e si connetterà con il sistema italiano di distribuzione del gas naturale nei pressi di San Foca in Italia.
